Learn words as usable language
A vocabulary score rewards range, precision and control. Learn each word with its meaning, collocations, grammar pattern and an example you could genuinely use.
- Education: access, curriculum, vocational training, graduate employment
- Work: productivity, job security, entrepreneurship, remote work
- Transport: congestion, public transport, road safety, commuting
- Environment: conservation, drought, renewable energy, waste management
Build topic maps
Group vocabulary around causes, effects, problems, solutions and opinions. This makes the language easier to retrieve in both Speaking and Writing.
- Write one accurate sentence for each new phrase
- Connect global topics to Zimbabwean experience where relevant
- Review the same language through speaking and writing
Avoid vocabulary traps
Rare words do not guarantee a high band. An advanced word used inaccurately is less effective than a common word used precisely.
- Do not memorise long lists of supposed Band 9 words
- Use idioms sparingly in Speaking and avoid them in formal Writing
- Check countable and uncountable nouns, prepositions and word forms
